As the Olympics unfolds in Paris, we’re seeing Africa’s remarkable athletic legacy shine once again, not only on the track but also across indoor and aquatic disciplines. With the likes of Tatjana Smith swimming for South Africa and Beatrice Chebet running for Kenya, the African contingent is displaying unparalleled athleticism at these Games.

History has already been made this year: Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour became the first ever African to win an Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics, taking gold in the women’s uneven bars. Inspired by that feat, let’s look back at other major moments for African athletes in Olympics history.
