Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?
Prying the phone out of our kids’ hands will be difficult, even more so than the quixotic efforts of my parents’ generation to get their kids to turn off MTV and get some fresh air. But more seems to be at stake in urging teens to use their phone responsibly, and there are benefits to be gained even if all we instill in our children is the importance of moderation.
The most important asset in your life isn’t time, but attention. The quality of the experiences in your life doesn’t depend on how many hours there are in the day, but in how the hours you have are used.
"A garden with only one type of flower or flowers with only one color is no good. This is a reminder that our strength, growth, survival and very existence lies in diversity."
"Individualistic cultures, which emphasise achievement over affiliation, help cultivate this time-is-money mindset. This creates an urgency to make every moment count, "
"When you feel things start to slow down, you have to keep asking questions. Questions are your best weapon against inertia."
Great read about Twitter, hope this company and product are here to stay for a long time!
Some people in my family could learn from this article..
Some features you might not be familiar with :)
"One study found that only 14% of people understood their company’s strategy and only 24% felt the strategy was linked to their individual accountabilities. Most executives mistakenly assume that repeated explanations through dense PowerPoint presentations are what increases understanding and ownership of strategy. To the contrary, people’s depth of commitment increases when they, not their leader, are talking."
The first step is to actually recognize — and own up to — the challenges. None of us likes to admit our weaknesses and flaws, but in order to improve, we have to. Each of the successful entrepreneurs I spoke with ultimately recognized the importance of these necessary but difficult tasks and that, in many cases, they were things they had been avoiding or procrastinating about — to the detriment of their business.
That is freaking scary!!!
Remember this mnemonic: SLIDE
- Lose the cliches
- Information needs emphasis
- Designate elements
- Empathy for the audience
Successful completion of tasks brings about the inner states that chronic procrastinators think they need to initiate tasks in the first place. Put in simpler form, you don’t wait until you’re in olympic form to start training. You train to get into olympic form.
Hiring the best, what does that even mean?
It appears that the most successful companies are managed well in part because they hire the best managers and in part because they find ways to let the less talented ones move on. And attracting top managers means making sure they are well compensated for their efforts, but perhaps not so much that other workers get left behind.
Loved this article! - “not knowing” is the whole fucking point. Life is all about not knowing, and then doing something anyway. All of life is like this. All of it. And it’s not going to get any easier just because you found out you love your job cleaning septic tanks or you scored a dream gig writing indie movies.
It's all about quality of the relationships, not about fame our money
It sounds so simple to say that bosses need to tell employees when they're screwing up. But it very rarely happens.
The latest estimate is that there are now over 4 billion people taking pictures around the world, creating a staggering 1.2 trillion photos per year, the bulk of which are made by smartphone cameras
The banality of his demise is striking. All that really happened is that he was great, and those around him became fixated on how much money he could make.
